Adult Learn to Sail Program

Classes are limited to 4 students per session. Minimum of 2 students are necessary to form a class.

Dates: All year

Days: Weekends and Mid-week. (2 consecutive day sessions recommended)

Time: 9am-4pm

Age: 16 years or older

Cost: $325 includes study manual, exam & certificate. $275 for OYC members

This program develops knowledgeable and capable adult sailors and instills in them a passion for the sport of sailing, which will lay the foundation for the future of the Oceanside Yacht Club and the sport of sailing.

The 2-day course consists of both classroom and “on-the-water” components that allow the student to learn the basics of sailing and safe seamanship. Instruction is on board a 23 foot Sonar keelboat.

Students will pilot the keelboat through various points of sail. They will learn how to trim the sail for maximum efficiency for a given wind speed and wind angle and how to maneuver the boat through a preset course.

OYC’s Learn to Sail Program places emphasis on having fun while learning the principles of sailing. The course includes a student study manual.

To enroll, complete and return the LTS registration forms with payment to the OYC office.

Junior Learn to Sail Program

2018 JRLTS will be available in May 2018

Focused on fun, sailing and safety, the Junior Learn to Sail program is offered from June through August and is open to participants from age seven to seventeen. No prior sailing experience is required.  Membership in Oceanside Yacht Club is optional.  Obtain and submit an application through the OYC office.

Beginner and intermediate sessions are offered in a two-week (half days) format. Advanced sailing is a one-week course that is also scheduled for half days. Sailing instruction is done in Oceanside Yacht Club’s Sabots, CFJs and keelboats in the Oceanside Harbor. Use of club boats is included in the course’s tuition.

All students will be required to pass a swim test on their first day. This test consists of swimming a lap at the OYC guest dock, treading water, and entering a Sabot from the water. Life jackets are worn at all times while on the water.

Courses are offered for three skill levels:

Level 1 Beginner Sailing.  No prerequisite

Designed for individuals who have little or no previous sailing experience, this course covers skills needed to sail “solo” in an 8’ Naples Sabot. The course focuses on rigging/launching, basic boat handling, seamanship and safety.

Level 2 Intermediate Sailing. Prerequisite: Beginner sailing or instructor approval

This course is designed for individuals who have acquired basic sailing skills and are ready to progress to more advanced concepts.  Level 2 builds upon skills learned in session one. Students sharpen their Sabot sailing skills and will be introduced to racing concepts, which may include double-handed sailing.

Level 3 Advanced Sailing. Prerequisite: Intermediate sailing or instructor approval

This course, which builds upon the intermediate skills course, focuses on complex tactical and boat handling skills, and is taught in a variety of dinghies and small keelboats.
